It all started in 1983 when Don Greulich and a friend decided they wanted to start a small engineering firm that could relate to businesses in ways that other companies were failing to. They believed that engineers generally did not pay enough attention to costs or owners' requirements. They believed that a client's project budget needed to be managed as closely as their own business budget. They believed that projects were often "over designed." The two men believed that every engineering system should work hard for the funds invested.

Everyone at the young firm was motivated to succeed. They worked incredibly hard. They would take on small projects for clients and then do a little more and a little more, along the way earning the trust of their clients and the rewards of larger and larger projects. The diversity of the work grew as the firm applied its resources and skills to all types of projects. After a few more years the firm was strengthened with the addition of Steve Kidwell and David Greulich, Don's brother. Steve was instrumental in creating and building the electrical engineering practice that exists today, while David used his breadth of knowledge to ensure that design projects went into the ground properly.

Today the firm employs more than 40 people and has earned its reputation as one of the most respected engineering companies in the region. The staff enjoys the pure satisfaction in delivering engineering solutions to the community. Evidence of their work is found in almost every major public or commercial project from downtown Louisville's Preston Point and University Hospital to dozens of buildings on the campus of Western Kentucky to the Episcopal Church Home. Nationally, their work can be seen in over 43 states with clients from Seattle WA to Miami Beach FL.

The firm has recently embarked on an effort to ensure its healthy growth in the next quarter century. Don Greulich is as committed as ever to the firm and to sharing his immense knowledge with the younger engineers. In an effort to free up Don and the other senior managers to focus on what they each do best, the firm has hired Ken Hoffman as its Chief Operating Officer to focus on strategic direction and daily operations.

The firm has entered an exciting period of planning for the future. The "era" of high-performance buildings and environmentally-intelligent green solutions is finally being supported through both legislative and economic forces, an aspect inherent in Kerr-Greulich's design for years. The leadership team is now more focused on the recruitment and mentoring of young talent and transferring their immense knowledge to the younger engineers. The firm has strengthened its administrative capabilities in order to support this technical growth and is finding new ways to continue to innovate and produce outstanding work for its clients.
