Western Kentucky University,
College of Education and Behavioral Sciences Building
Bowling Green, Kentucky
The College of Education and Behavioral Science (CEBS) at Western Kentucky University occupies an important place in the history of the university. The university was founded in 1906 as the Western Kentucky State Normal School, one of two teacher training institutions in the state. Today's College of Education and Behavioral Science has evolved from those first founding days to be currently one of five colleges that make up the university.
The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences building began construction in the spring of 2009. This 120,000 square feet multipurpose building includes the Dean's offices, the Educational Technology Center, instructional spaces, teacher services, counseling and student affairs. The building represents state-of-the-art in sustainable design and is planned for LEED Certification in accordance with USGBC practice. Kerr-Greulich provided the full MEP design package including energy modeling and optimization studies, supporting the LEED certification effort.
Additional design highlights include:
120,000 CFM, custom air-handling unit with connection into central district cooling system and district heating system.
Demand control ventilation to minimize energy use when occupancy is low and maximize air quality to high-occupancy areas.
Occupancy sensors on lighting to minimize and control energy use when spaces are not occupied.
Thermodynamically controlled diffusers to provide individual occupant comfort.
Energy recovery from the exhaust through make up air.
