Commercial Airline Maintenance Hangar
Louisville, Kentucky
This new aircraft maintenance facility was the first operation to be built at the 50-acre Louisville International Commerce Center. The facility is a subsidiary of a nationally based airline holding organization which expanded jobs in the Louisville area upon completion of the hangar. The 10-acre property with 60,250 square feet hanger features six bays that allow six planes to line up wingtip to wingtip and move in and out independently. The design included under floor door track, hot water ice melting, a specialized high expansion foam fire protection system and specific plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems to accommodate a safe work environment in an aircraft repair facility.
Details of Kerr-Greulich's MEP design include:
The hangar is completely fire suppressed including high-expansion foam system using two 6000 gpm fire pumps. The water main was extended to this facility as part of the project.
The plumbing includes cast iron waste and vent systems. Domestic water is provided by a recirculating tempered water system and includes ADA and water-conserving plumbing fixtures. The facility includes complete natural gas distribution and compressed air distribution systems.
HVAC is provided by roof-top and split heating and cooling units for conventional spaces. The service bays are conditioned by powered exhausters and gas-fired infra-red heating.
Hot-water ice melting systems are provided at the rolling doors to all service bays.
A new 1600 Amp, 277/480 volt, three phase service was installed and transformed to 120/208 volt for distribution. The lighting in the service bays is metal halide. Static grounding devices are provided in the service bays. All electrical practices in service bays are pre-applicable NFPA and FAA requirements.
Complete addressable fire alarm system.
