Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institution

Avery Mitchell Correctional Institution is a 856-bed, 200,000 sq. ft. medium security facility housing male inmates. It sits on a 100-acre tract of land beside the Avery and Mitchell County line. The prison is designed with three 272-bed units, dormitory style, supported by a central administration building and 40 segregation cells.
Kerr-Greulich provided MEP design support for the new facility which includes Administration and Vocational Education Building, Eight Dormitories, Recreation, Food Service, Medical Clinic with treatment rooms and 24-hour care, and other related services.
Specific features of our design included:
Fire Protection: Full- suppression fire protection systems using wet systems, zoned, and employing security-style heads.
Domestic hot water boilers and storage tanks for common areas. High- temperature hot water to tempered water converters (instantaneous converters) for secured areas.
5000 gallon grease interceptor.
Security fixtures in inmate areas.
Roof-top VAV system (34K cfm) for Administration area using hot water reheat.
Constant volume system for secured areas. Smoke control/isolation/removal system in cell areas.
A central plant including two 183-ton air-cooled chillers, two 4.5M BTUH boilers for heating service, one 3.5M BTUH boiler for general domestic hot water service; and one 2.5M BTUH boiler for utility domestic hot water service.
Building Automation (DDC) System.
4000 Amp, 277/480 volt, three phase main power service.
750 KW/938 KVA, 1200 Amp Emergency Generator.
Complete indoor and outdoor lighting design including security fixtures in appropriate areas and commercial lighting in non-inmate areas.
Low voltage system design including fire alarm, smoke control, security, voice, data, and intercom.
