CSX Transportation - Dispatch Facilities
Baltimore, MD; Huntington, WV; Nashville, TN; and Indianapolis, Indiana
CSX Corporation, based in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the nation's leading transportation companies, providing rail-based transportation services. CSX implemented a strategic decision to decentralize their dispatch operations and Kerr-Greulich was selected to support this critical effort. These new dispatch facilities supported the effort by CSX to distribute control of the active train traffic to regional dispatch facilities including new train control systems and applications. They are critical 24/7 facilities that control and direct train traffic on all CSX lines.
KGEI design highlights include:
Each of these facilities is provided with redundant power distribution systems with N+1 UPS and generator capacity down to the branch circuits supplied to each dispatcher work station.
The UPS, lighting, and HVAC systems for the facilities are supported by two diesel generator sets, sized to provide for full redundant generator capacity to allow for the facility to remain operational, even upon failure of one of the generators during the loss of utility power.
HVAC systems are typically diverse to meet the varying demands of the facilities; CRAC units for the data centers, and traditional HVAC for offices, conference rooms, kitchen/break room areas, and dispatch area. Dispatches are provided with individual control of their work area. The HVAC system design includes an N+1 capacity to support the full operation of the facility in the event of a failure of a component of the HVAC system.
The lighting needs within these facilities are also highly variant and critical to the 24/7 demands on the facility. Effective, high-efficiency lighting and individual work station control, applicable to the given space and program, are used throughout to ensure optimal light conditions for the given function.
